4/6 Adlestrop House
Former rectory now house. Mid-late C17 to early C18 altered C18,
C19 and C20 extensions. Coursed squared and dressed limestone,
slate roof, ashlar stacks. Plan: rectangular main body, C18 wing
onto north-west corner with C19 extension at rear. Garden front:
gabled C18 wing projects forwards slightly from facade left. 2
Cotswold dormers to main body right, C19 canted 2-storey former
porch projection projects forwards between dormers. Single bay
C19 extension at right. 2 storeys and attic. Attic of C18 wing
lit by 2-light C20 casement with glazing bars, Cotswold dormers of
main body lit by double-chamfered stone-mullioned cross windows
with stopped hoods. 8 bays; 12-pane sashes with plain surrounds
some with keystones to first floor, 15-pane sashes within moulded
surrounds to ground floor mostly reaching almost to ground level.
6-pane sashes to ground floor of canted C19 former entrance porch
with former fanlight retained over inserted central window. Single
12-pane sash above. Entrance now through porch on south-east
front. Stopped hoods of former cross windows, now sash windows
retained on this front. House once occupied by Rev. Thomas Leigh,
later Lord Leigh, uncle of Jane Austen who was a frequent visitor
to the house. Interior not inspected.
