Possibly a former farmhouse, extended to form small country house.
Core probably of early or mid C18, much enlarged c1790s and
extended to west in mid/late C19. Main elevations faced in
roughcast on stone plinth with moulded stone cornice, west
elevation of early house still in dressed stone, hipped stone slate
roof, scattered stone stacks with moulded cornice and some C19
brick stacks. Main section of 2 storeys added to earlier block on
south and east to form a rough T-shape, further enlarged to west in
C19. Entrance front to east has 3 large 12-pane sashes in plain
stone architraves, and 2 similar on ground floor flanking central
basket archway with recessed 6-panel door, top 4 fielded, lower 2
flush, with sidelights and depressed radial fanlight over full
width of arch. South front has 3 similar first floor windows.
Ground floor has blocked central doorway and flanking full length
triple sashes with lower 9-pane sash rising up into wall to make a
walk-through opening. Hipped iron pentice with trelliswork
supports across whole width of C18 section. C19 wing to left has
square ashlar bay of 1/4/1 lights, those on first floor arched.
Large opening on left hand return with C20 patio doors, formerly
french doors into orangery now removed. Early range has five
small 12-pane sashes on west side and part glazed door originally
of 6 fielded panels, 2 hipped dormers. Small stable wing adjoins
in north west corner with dovecote gable end to west. Radial
glazed first floor window on north side of late C18 range, probably
a stair window. Central heating was installed as underfloor
heating in late C19 and perforated brass grilles remain on ground
floor. Interior retains most original joinery.
