Description

BARRINGTON A40
SP 11 SE
(north side)
5/15 Gate Piers and flanking wall to
Barrington Park Estate
GV II*
Pair of gate piers and flanking wall. C18, reputedly by William
Kent (q.v. Barrington Park). Ashlar. Large rectangular piers c4m
in height set back from the road and flanked by quadrant walls c2m
in height which curve out towards the road. The whole entrance is
c30m in width. The lower two-thirds of each pier is constructed
from flat-chamfered rusticated ashlar blocks, divided from the
upper third by a band. The upper part is decorated with single
swags on the north and south sides and foliate bosses within
moulded oval margins on the other two sides. Triangular pediments.
Flat coping to the flanking walls which terminate at small piers
(obscured by foliage at the time of resurvey - June 1986). The
wall is ramped downwards to the right and left of each of these
piers.
