12/78 Fossebridge Inn


Inn. Late C18 and C19 (range with gable end to road dated 1858)
possibly incorporating earlier elements. Mostly coursed squared
and dressed limestone; ashlar garden front to C19 range at rear
mostly stone slate roofing; most stacks restored C20 with ashlar
quoins; one original ashlar stack. Plan: two parallel ranges
with the late C18 range at the front and C19 range at rear; range
dated 1858 runs forwards at right angles at right gable end of the
C18 range; further minor extensions at right angles to the right-
hand return of the latter. Late C18 range: 2 storeys and attic.
C19 range and range dated 1858: 2 storeys. Four-windowed
entrance front to the late C18 range; 4-pane sashes with plain
architraves. Four-panelled door (two upper panels now glazed)
off-centre right with a moulded architrave and a triangular
pediment. Moulded eaves cornice with band. Three-windowed
entrance front to the late C19 range; one 16-pane sash to the
ground floor with a tripartite sash far right; three 12-pane
sashes to the first floor. Fielded 4 panelled door off-centre
left with a 4-pane hall light. Ogee-arched boot scraper to the
right of the door. Six-windowed garden front to the C19 range;
12-pane sashes with plain architraves. C19 fielded 4-panel door
up a flight of 6 stone steps with a simple cast iron railing
terminating at a pair of stone plinths. Gable-end and axial
stacks. Projecting stack to the late C19 range. Interior not
inspected. Formerly known as Lord Chedworths Arms.
