16/226 Mill and miller's house

GV II

Former mill and millers house. Mid-late C18. Random limestone
rubble; house pebble-dashed south-east front; stone slate roof;
rubble stacks and brick stack. 'L'-shaped plan to house with mill
at the south gable end; single-storey extension at right angles at
rear. Single-storey extension with corrugated iron roof to mill
not of special interest. House: 2 storeys. Mill: 3 storeys and
attic. Four-windowed south-east front to the house with 12-pane
sashes with plain architraves to both floors (one set within the
blocking of a former doorway). Part-glazed door with glazing bars
and a plain dressed stone architrave left; flat leaded canopy over
the door. Mill: 4-windowed south front; 3-light casement and a
single-light casement to the ground floor: gearing projects from
two of these windows; 2 and 3-light casements (one blind) and
pitching door to the first floor; 4 blind windows painted to
imitate 2-light casements with glazing bars to the upper floor.
Single 3-light hipped roof dormer. Plank doors lower right and
lower left. All windows and doorways with dressed stone lintels
and keystones. Rear elevation: segmental-headed arch over point
where head race ran under the mill. Fenestration at rear of house
and mill comprises 2 and 3-light metal casements; 12-pane sash and
segmental-headed casements. C19 plank door with single glazed
panel at the top to the miller's house. Axial, gable-end and
corner stacks.
Interior of house: shutters with sunken panels; dado; basket-headed
recess; 6-panel doors with moulded architraves (staircase not
inspected). Mill machinery was moved to Arlington Mill, Bibury in
1960.
