Description

RENDCOMB -
SP 01 SW
2/238 Corn silo, Aycote Farm

II

Silo. Built 1920-21 by Sidney Lane of Marsden Hill. Coursed
squared and dressed limestone; stone slate roof with slate-hung
upper storey. Circular plan with a small projection on the north
side. Plank door on the south side; 3 small shuttered openings,
formerly with external access via a ladder above; larger opening
at the level of the slate hanging. Conical roof formerly with a
weathervane, now missing. Wooden ventilation louvres, now mostly
removed, below the eaves. The building was formerly used to store
vetch, used as silage. The silo was gradually filled from the
bottom up, via the shuttered openings, the vetch was compacted by
means of men walking around on top of it.
(personal communication - Mr. Kite, North Cerney)
