Dwelling, formerly Rectory. Thomas Fulljames. 1836. Dressed and squared stone,
ashlar dressings and trim, stone slate roofs. Large L-plan block in Cotswold style,
various triple-shafted octagonal stacks with moulded cappings and skirts. Moulded
string at first floor level. Various mullioned or mullioned and transomed lights,
mostly with drips. Entrance front, west, symmetrical composition with 2½ storeys,
including small 2-light gable light with glazing bars, and cross-mullion lights at
ground floor in base of each stack. Two slender columns in antis carrying flat
'Tudor' arches as recessed porch up 5 full-width steps to central part glazed
vertically panelled door between 2-light windows. Garden front, right, includes
2-storey hexagonal bay, 1:3:1 lights with glazing bars, and smaller 2-storey square
bay with 3-light casements containing sashes with glazing bars.
This was a new Rectory provided to the design of Thomas Fulljames, added to an
existing building, now a separate dwelling known as Bell Court (q.v.). It is a
masterly, if mannerist essay in 'Cotswold Tudor'.
