(east side), Brookthorpe

5/120 Bacchus


Detached farmhouse. Mid C18; back wings c1840. Ashlar limestone;
brick rear wings; replacement concrete tile roof; ashlar chimneys.
Three-storey with cellar to front range; 2-storey back wings.
Front: 3-window fenestration; crenellated parapet with 3 crocketed
finials; off-centre porch to doorway with square head and 6-panel
fielded door; chamfered Tudor arch to parapet gabled porch with
Tudor-arched lancets to sides; all windows are chamfered mullioned
with hood moulds and leaded casements; 2-light centrally, flanked
by 4-light to ground and middle floors, 3-light to upper floor.
North side: gabled to right with single-window fenestration,
central offset buttress to cellar and ground floor partly blocking
mullioned caement; 3-light casement to middle floor, blocked upper
floor 2-light; none leaded; brick wing to left with upper floor 16-
pane sash and cambered arch; leaded casement below with timber
plaque inscribed 'DAIRY' (to gain exemption from window tax).
South side: mullioned casments as to north, but with leading to
ground floor; 16-pane sash to each floor of back wing to right.
Back: 3 gables, stone-built in centre flanked by brick; central 4-
light mullioned casement with hood, otherwise timber casements;
louvred attic vent to central gable; 2 chimney stacks with paired
diagonal shafts and moulded caps to back of front range. Interior
not inspected. Garden terraced to front with stone steps leading
to front door.
