GV II

Formerly large country house, now flats. Dated 1584; extensively
rebuilt 1850 and enlarged 1870 for S.S. Marling. Ashlar limestone;
roughcast render; ashlar chimneys; flat lead and plain tile
roofs. Tudor gothic revival style. Irregular plan incorporating
C16 house, mostly 3-storey with cellar; ballroom wing on north
side. South front: symmetrical with central projecting tower
having Tudor-arched porch within base and canted 2-storey oriel
over. Doorway inscribed 'MIHI VOBISQUE' . Tower has low square
spire above machicolated eaves; small timber lucarne on each side.
Four-window fenestration to elevation, all mullioned and transomed
with hoodmoulds; canted 2-storey bays on outer positions with
crenellated parapets. Octagonal corner buttresses with pinnacles
and continuous crenellated parapet. East side: elevation to left
is as to front. At centre parapet-gabled end of C16 house with
scattered fenestration: 3-light recessed chamfered basement window
with hoodmould and datestone 1584. C19 fenestration to ground and
middle floors; original attic 2-light has hoodmould and leaded
casement. C16 wing extends to right with north-facing parapet-
gabled end, extensively rebuilt with large mullioned and transomed
canted oriel with datestone SSM 1850. North side: central high-
roomed wing projects forward with tall mullioned and transomed
windows, octagonal buttresses with pinnacles and crenellated
parapet. Mullioned and transomed central bay with crow-stepped
gable has projecting balcony on large supporting brackets with
realistic foliage carving; datestone SSM 1870. Octagonal stair
turret wth conical coped roof on west side of wing. West side:
mixed and scattered fenestration including part of original west
end of C16 house with 2-light casement dated 1584. Tall square
tower with crenellated parapet and tall round-arched windows.
Interior: some features may be C18, retained during rebuilding.
Fine staircase with 2 barleysugar balusters per tread looks C18;
extensive panelling may also be earlier than 1850. Staircase hall
altered in conversion but C19 painted glass skylight survives.
Forms part of group with No 23 (Stanley Park Lodge) etc (q.v.), and
provides part of High Victorian silhouette to this part of Selsley
West.
