Description

SO 8003 SW LEONARD STANLEY THE STREET
(west side)

12/82 Lavender Cottage and Yew Tree
House

GV II

Two houses. Mid C17; early C18 rebuilding; late C18 alterations
and c1830 addition. Coursed rubble limestone; rebuilt artificial
stone and brick chimneys; stone and Welsh slate roofs. Single-
storey with attic; return wing increased to 2-storey. North east
side: 3 segmental-arched openings to Yew Tree House, left with
casement, centre blocked, right with plank door. Eaves-mounted
gabled roof dormer. Segmental-arched early C18 casement to return
wing; 16-pane upper floor sash and hipped roof. South east end:
rendered with small off-centre attic casement; rebuilt artificial
stone chimney. South west side: projecting 2-storey C20 wing with
metal casements; rendered wall with 2 segmental-arched casements
to right. Tall brick chimney to left. Left of wing is coursed
rubble front to Lavender Cottage with segmental-arched casement and
doorway with gabled porch. Raking roof dormer.
Interior: timber framed partitions. The partial rebuilding of this
house would suggest that it was damaged in the village fire of
1686. Timber-framed internal partitions and possibly some of the
original structure survives internally. Important position on bend
in road.
