SO 8502 RODBOROUGH HOUNDSCROFT
17/118 Bownham Grange
Large detached house. Mid C17; early C18 and 1822 additions;
mid C20 alterations. Coursed and random rubble limestone, partly
roughcast rendered; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-
storey with attic and cellar; cross wing at north end; central
wing on west side. East front: main range of house reduced in
length to left upon partial demolition of c1910 addition, with C20
altered single-storey part remaining. Main part of range to right
is C17 with 3-window fenestration. C19 rectangular single-storey
bay window in former door position below full gable to right end;
paired 12-pane sashes to upper floor; recessed chamfered attic
casement above with hoodmould. Mullioned 3-light casements to
left beyond casements without mullions. Gabled roof dormer.
Tall ridge-mounted ashlar chimney at each end of C17 house. Gable
of early C18 wing projects forward to right with 2-storey canted
bay window having coped top. North end: 2-window recessed cavetto
mullioned fenestration, 3-light left, 2-light right; hoodmoulds to
ground floor only. West front: became principal front after
addition of 1822 at centre. North-facing canted single-storey bay
to 1822 wing with tall 2+2-light mullioned window above with
shouldered arched lights; small parapet gable over. Tall
projecting chimney to west gable end has panelled band below cap.
Mullioned fenestration to north side of wing. Parapet gable of
early C18 cross wing to left with large mullioned and transomed
stair window; round arched niche in gable. Right of wing is C20
gabled addition with porch in angle with 1822 wing to left.
Interior: many fittings date from early C18 including panelled
window shutters and doors. Upper part of spiral staircase
survives in each gable end of C17 house. Became the base of the
extensive carrying business owned by Tanner family in C18. West
wing is a very early example of Gothic revival style, possibly by
(N.M. Herbert, 'Rodborough' in V.C.H. Glos. xi, 1976, pp. 218-234;
and K. Webb, Notes on Bownham Grange, n.d.)
