Large country house. Late C17; C18 alterations and additions;
c1821 east range for Thomas Reddall Haycock; c1860 addition.
Limestone ashlar; random and coursed rubble limestone; ashlar
chimneys; Welsh and stone slate roofs. Three-storey; 2-storey
east range added forming L-plan; 2-storey addition to east range.
East front: main c1821 front in ashlar to left with central 2-
storey bow, open to ground floor with Ionic colonnade forming
porch; double 3-panel doors with rectangular decorative fanlight
over. Curved Venetian window above porch with panelled pilasters
and marginal lights. Two-window fenestration either side of bow,
all 12-pane sashes in plain openings. Plain upper floor level
band; boldly projecting parapet cornice with blocking course.
Parapet mounted chimneys with moulded caps at centre of each end of
east range. Addition of c1860 recessed to right with 3-window
sash fenestration having marginal lights. Plain upper floor band
and ridge-mounted chimney matching main east range. South front:
earlier house at centre with C18 addition to left and end of east
range to right. C17 house is 3-storey with mix of sash and
chamfered mullioned casement fenestration. Various continuous
drip moulds; indications of some blocked mullioned casements.
Single-storey late C19 bay window with mullioned and transomed
casements to right. C18 addition to left has single 3-light
chamfered mullioned ground floor casement, 2 to upper floor and 2-
light in small attic gable, all with hoodmoulds. Single upper
floor 12-pane sash in end of east range. Two ridge-mounted
chimneys with moulded caps. North side: 2 small attic gables to
C17 and C18 range each with 2-light casements; scattered 2- and 3-
light casements on various levels below. West side: large low-
pitched brick gable to later C19 addition with sash fenestration.
Interior: main hall with elliptical stone staircase having Regency
wrought iron balustrade and wreathed handrail; oval hall sky-
light. Fine plaster cornice to hall with dividing oval arch.
Good opposed Regency doorcases to principal rooms. Decorative
plaster cornices throughout Regency house. Staircase with
barleysugar balusters in C17 house with moulded handrails and
strings. Outbuildings stands to north (q.v.).
