16/253 The Lawn
Large detached house. c1820. Random rubble limestone, formerly
rendered; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Three-storey with
attic; secondary block on east side forms L-plan. Front: main
block to left with 3-window fenestration, 12-pane sashes to ground
and middle floors, 6-pane to upper floor, all with plain raised
architraves. Central doorway with projecting entablature on
attached Tuscan columns; 6-panel fielded door with rectangular
cobweb fanlight. Hollow moulded eaves cornice with blocking
course. Hipped roof with central flat-roofed dormer having 6-pane
sash. Ridge-mounted chimney with moulded cap; projecting chimney
with eaves-mounted stack at west end. Secondary block to right
set back with 2-window fenestration as to main front and additional
small casements. C20 flat-roofed addition in angle. Attached
outbuildings at east end are not of special interest. Rear:
scattered sash fenestration including central narrow stair sash.
Central doorway with 4-panel glazed door in screen with oval arch;
iron porch. Later C19 single-storey rectangular bay to right with
glazed doors. Sash fenestration to secondary block projecting
forward to left.
Interior: panelled shutters to most sashes. Staircase with stick
balusters and open scrolled strings.
