ST 69 NE ALKINGTON A38, Newport
4/38 York House and York Cottage
(formerly listed as No 2 and No 1
Two cottages of unequal size in one building. Late C18. Brick on
stone plinth, rendered sides, slate roof, very large brick ridge
stack to left of centre marking junction between York House to
right and York Cottage to left. Single range, 2 storeys and attic,
with parapet wall. 3 windows, 16-pane sashes with vermiculated
keystone and large voussoirs. Ground floor similar with 2 round-
headed brick arch doorcases with thin stone keystone, shallow
radial fanlight and 6-panel doors: that to York Cottage, on extreme
left, has 4 fielded panels, lower 2 flush; that to York House,
between windows 2 and 3, has 6 fielded panels. 3 cambered head
dormers with twin 6-pane casements. Rear facade has mostly C20
windows, in cambered surrounds, and large flat roofed dormer
across most of width.
