EASTINGTON BATH ROAD
12/44 Alkerton Farmhouse
Farmhouse, originally 3-bay hall house. Mid/late C16, with south
wing probably of late C17/early C18. Square-panel timber framing
with brick and plaster infill on brick and stone plinth, and with
downward braces crossing horizontal rails, rear wing in brick and
most of east side, partially rebuilt during C20; double Roman tile
roof with ashlar ridge flue to large inserted stone stack. Main
range of 2 storeys and attic, originally probably a three-bay hall
possibly screened-off sleeping chamber to south, now a passage,
with jettied cross wing to north containing parlour and service
with small stair behind inserted stone stack and slightly later
garderobe on first floor with brick and stone base and timber-
framed upper floor reached by very narrow doors from both upper
rooms. Additional 2-storey cross wing to south contained dairy
with cheese rooms over. Scattered fenestration, but with several
original glazed 2-light wood mullions in cross wing. West side has
early C19 lattice timber porch in angle next to cross wing,
possibly original entrance, with inserted 3-light casement to
centre and later timber porch and door to right. Brick wing has
cambered head 2-light casements, and plank door with loft door over
to west gable end.
Interior has chamfered compartmented ceiling on ground floor;
large stack has been partially bricked-up inside; small 3-centred
arched doorways give off stair behind stack to rooms in upper floor
of cross wing. Interior generally unspoilt, containing all
original beams, floorboards, some doors.
