Large detached house, formerly subdivided. Late C15, modified
and floors inserted C17, further alterations C18 and front
refenestrated c1830; major restoration c1990, low wing added
to east and 2-storey wing to west. Exposed C17 box framing on
six cruck pairs, exposed to east gable; rear in late C17
brickwork; plain tile roofs and brick stacks. Original 6-bay
plan, with 3-bay hall, 2-bay service area and one bay solar to
east; stack in first service bay added mid C16; hall floored
mid C17, when east wing and stair added; west wing added
c.1830. Two storeys, attic to rear wing. The front has 4
windows, with 3 large gabled face dormers, probably c1830,
each with a 3-light pointed Gothick casement with leading,
above similar 3- and 5-light casements. Each side of the main
door is a small 4-light C17 window with diagonal wood
mullions. The main framing is on a high rubble stone plinth,
stepped up to 2 of the gabled bays. The left return has
exposed framing, includinga cruck pair, with a 3-light
casement to first floor and late C20 flat-roofed extension.
Central 3 bays to rear wall has gabled full-height dormers,
each with a 2-light casement, also at ground floor, with
central door. The low gabled service wing has a casement, with
a door on the return, and the higher wing has a small 2-light
casement to the attic, above a C18 12-pane sash and a
tripartite sash to the ground floor.
INTERIOR: six cruck blades are variously visible at all
levels; smoke blackening above hall and kitchen in former
service area. Cross passage has stone flagged floor, chamfered
arched wooden heads to doorways to hall and former service
area, and early winder stair to rear right. Kitchen to left
has large stop-chamfered beams and exposed chamfered joists,
some replacements; wide fireplace with bressummer has bread
oven, reputedly of c1690, with C19 cast-iron door and to right
a deep recess with a splat fretted ventilator above plank
door. Parlour has chamfered joists with bar stops, fireplace
with stone cheeks and a deep replacement bressummer. The room
in the wing has C18 panelling and detail. The winder stair has
a short length of C17 balustrading with turned balusters to a
square newel. C18 and C19 plank doors some with arched wooden
heads which appear to have been resited.
Formerly known as Advowson House, and set into the rear wall
was a finely carved C16 stone panel depicting Susannah and the
Elders, and referred to as the "Advowson Stone"; the current
owners have photographs of the plaque, and are aware of a
restoration made to it before its removal c1988 and their
subsequent arrival. A median dendrochronological date of 1498
has been postulated for the crucks, some pairs of which are
probably in black poplar.

Formerly Advowson Farmhouse, divided into 2 occupations in 1968.
Possibly late C15/early C16, with early C17 cross wing to east.
Roughcast faced timber-framing said to have 5 pairs of crucks, one
exposed on east end, with some brickwork, on rendered plinth.
Tile roof, brick stacks to right end, ridge to left of centre, and
to rear gable end of cross wing. Front and rear now with 3 large
gables lighting inserted upper floor, each with long 3-light
casements with arched head to each light. On front, ground floor
has 5-light similar to left and right and central 6-panel door in
moulded wood surround with smaller similar 2-light immediately to
right, and 2 to far left. Door of 4 fielded panels to top, lower
2 flush. House divided immediately to right of front door, and
West Gables to right has small single-storey brick addition to
right and to rear. Interior not accessible but likely to be of
considerable interest.
