Barn. Farmhouse attached at south east corner (q.v.). C15;
altered to cloth workshop c1700; C18 additions. Random rubble
limestone; stone slate roof. Five-bay barn with south porch and
outshuts. South side: central gabled porch with weatherboarding
above doorway with timber lintel. Two lean-to outshuts are later
additions. West end of barn converted to stable with loft over
entered up flight of stone steps and gabled eaves-level doorway.
Parapet gable ends to barn, east end with cross-roll saddle having
trefoil to each face. Slit vents and central pedestrian doorway to
east end. Blocked loft doorway to west end, coping to this gable
partially rebuilt. North side: continuous chamfered plinth; 4
offset buttresses rising half height up wall. Central barn doorway
has variety of stone and concrete block infill. Some other
openings.
Interior: fine 5-bay roof of raised cruck trusses having arched
bracing to collars. Curved windbracing, some missing. Mullioned
fenestration inserted in south side wall and upper floor added when
converted to cloth workshop c1700, upper floor probably used for
spinning, weaving taking place below. Casements blocked up before
addition of outshuts - probably late C18. An important barn,
probably at one time formed part of group of buildings associated
with the late medieval manor house.
