Large detached house. Mid-late C16; mid C17 addition; C20
addition. Random and coursed thin-bedded rubble limestone, part
roughcast rendered; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-
storey with cellar and attic; 2 small wing additions on south east
side. North west side: slightly projecting parapet gabled wings
at each end and full central gable each with cross roll saddle.
Single-window fenestration to each end gable, 2 windows to central
part of elevation. Four-light casements to ground floor, each
with central king mullion, 3 with lowered sills; 3-light to upper
floor, 2-light to each gable, all recessed cavetto mullioned with
hoodmoulds. Some attic casements retain lead latticing and
original glass. Blocked single-light casements to side of right
wing. Two ridge-mounted chimneys with moulded caps. South west
end: parapet gabled end with cross roll saddle. Single-window
fenestration as to north west side. South east side: 2-window
fenestration to central part of elevation, 2 and 3-light, that to
ground floor and blocked doorway under continuous drip moulding.
C17 parapet gabled addition projects forward to right with single-
window fenestration, 3-light to ground and upper floor, 2-light to
attic, all recessed chamfered mullioned with hoodmoulds. Lean-to
outbuilding adjoining this wing is built of very large dressed
stone. C20 gabled entrance hall addition to left end of elevation
has central doorway with pedimented stone porch hood on shaped
brackets; flanking single-light casements; 3-light above. North
east end: large projecting chimney with ashlar shaft; moulded
cap. Single-storey outbuilding links with north west gable end of
Garden Cottage (q.v.).
Interior: good early C18 panelled room with fluted pilasters and
moulded timber cornice. Large stone fireplace. Niche with shell
hood on another wall. Very large hall fireplace with Tudor arch.
More elaborate stone fireplace on upper floor with moulded opening
having lozenge decorated stops; classical frieze over with lozenge
and rosette decoration. Cellar may contain some masonry from
preceding medieval house. An early example of the standard
Cotswold house, this retaining a medieval plan with central hall,
now subdivided. Forms group with Garden Cottage (q.v.) and barn
(q.v.).
