10/174 Miserden House

GV II

Large detached house. Mid C18; additions and alterations dated JM
1810, 1863 for Sir John Rolt, and c1928 by Sidney Barnsley and
Norman Jewson. Ashlar, coursed and random rubble limestone;
ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic; 2-
storey additions to each end. Front: 5-window fenestration to
ashlar-fronted C18 house to centre, all sashes without glazing bars
in openings with plain keyed architraves. Central flat-roofed
single-storey porch with similar opening to doorway and small side
windows. Plain upper floor level band and moulded cornice below
plain parapet. Three hipped roof dormers. Ashlar chimneys with
moulded caps to ends of main roof ridge. Gabled wing projects
forward to left with upper floor 12-pane sash; parapet on south
west side only. Long 2-storey range runs to right: first part has
datestone: 'J.R. RESTORED 1863' and 2 gables with barge boards;
C19 mullioned casements with hoodmoulds; hipped roof dormer
between gables. Two further dormers to pre-C19 part at right end,
casements being C20 replacements. Rear: part of original
elevation left unaltered with 3 upper floor 12-pane sashes in plain
keyed surrounds; leaded casement below and doorway with stone
lintel dated: 'J M 1810'. Cross gabled addition of c1928 projects
forward to left with timber-framed windows having leaded iron
casements; off-centre projecting chimney stack to main gable.
Tall parapet to wing projecting forward to right with leaded timber
casement fenestration - this probably a mid C19 addition. North
east end: hipped roof to cross wing; two 16-pane upper floor
sashes, casements below.
Interior: front room retains original fielded panelling, Regency
fireplace being flanked by fluted full-height Doric pilasters.
Oval arched alcove either side of fireplace. Cornice has fretwork
decorative band. Main room of c1928 wing has decorative plaster
frieze by Norman Jewson, depicting Cotswold animals, this
treatment continued on plastered beams. Simply moulded stone
fireplace. Stable (q.v.) to north east.
