Large detached house. Mid-late C16, early C17 porch; west
addition c1721. Restored 1868 for Sir John Rolt. Random and
coursed rubble limestone; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. L-
plan house, 2-storey with attic. Two-storey west range. Front:
earlier part of house to right with central 2-storey parapet gabled
porch with attic. Narrow attenuated pilaster strips to moulded
square-headed opening. Continuous drip course above and to upper
floor 3-light recessed cavetto mullioned casement; 2-light with
hoodmould to attic. Escutcheon of arms and angled sundial, latter
dated 1721, possibly the date for addition of west range.
Projecting chimney to left side of porch is corbelled out at upper
floor level; shaft has moulded cap. Three-light ground floor and
two 2-light upper floor recessed cavetto mullioned casements to
each part of elevation either side of porch. Chimneys to each
gable end of front range, each with diagonal shafts and moulded
caps. Three-window fenestration to higher range to left, all 2-
light chamfered mullioned casements, leaded to upper floor, ground
floor casements with continuous hoodmould rising over smaller 2-
light to right, oval window above - this presumably a doorway
originally. Rear: rear wing has diagonal offset buttresses, this
wing possibly representing the earliest part of the house. Single-
window fenestration to gable end of wing, 3-light to ground and
upper floor, 2-light to attic, all recessed cavetto mullioned.
Inscription tablet reads: 'RESTAURAVIT / JOHANNES ROLT MILES / PER
TEMPUS DOLORIS / ANNO DOMINI MDCCCLXVIII'. Chimney gable with
paired diagonal shafts to west side of wing. Mixed mullioned
fenestration to rear of main range, ground floor lean-to with 2-
light trefoil headed casement. East end: mullioned fenestration,
mostly C19 restored.
Interior: room to rear has moulded Tudor arched fireplace with
lozenge and flower decorated stops. Most of house refitted in C19.
Barn and stable (q.v.) to south west of house is linked by round
archway.
