SO 8408-8508 PITCHCOMBE STROUD ROAD
(east side)

9/205 The Eagle

II

Former inn, now detached house. Mid C17; early-mid C18
additions. Random and coursed rubble limestone; rendered
chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic; L-plan.
West (road) side: gabled wing added centrally to rear of main
north-south range; single-window fenestration to gable end, 3-
light to ground floor in small iron-railed area, 2-light to upper
floor and attic, all recessed chamfered mullioned casements. To
left of wing main range has 3-light ground floor and 2-light upper
floor casements. Central ridge-mounted chimney with moulded cap.
South end: single-window fenestration to gable end, C20 rebuilt on
ground floor with 3-light casement having doorway to left, both
under drip course; 3-light upper floor and 2-light to attic, both
with hoodmoulds. North end: attic casement with timber lintel
above lean-to attached to gable end. Wing to left has 2-light
casement to each floor. Central gable to east side, mullioned
fenestration below. North wing projects forward to right.
Interior not inspected. Became a coaching inn upon construction
of the adjacent Cheltenham-Bath turnpike road.
