2/234 Knowle House
Detached house. Late C17, substantially rebuilt 1845. Ashlar front, coursed
and random rubble limestone to sides and rear; ashlar chimneys; Welsh slate
roof. Single depth, 2-room plan, three-storey, with single-storey outshut to
rear. Two-storey addition to west end. South front: 3-window facade with
central break-forward; 16-pane sashes to ground and middle floors, 12-pane to
attic, one altered with top hung light. Central doorway with pilasters and
entablature; dated 'P. H. 1845' over door. Diagonal lattice glazing bars to
fanlight above readed transom; 4-panel part glazed door. Plain cill band to
middle floor. Parapet gabled ends, each with chimney having plain cap. Scat-
tered small casements to east end, this with C17 masonry up to first floor
level. C19 lean-to to west end, increased in height in C20. Rear outshut was
originally open shelter, now incorporated into house. Original mullioned window
opening; are still visible internally, in the rear wall. One retains its leaded
casements. Central staircase and other fittings date from 1845. This house is
of considerable social interest, illustrating an adaption of the 'standard'
Stroud/Painswick gabled cottage, to a small Victorian villa.
