15/237 Culver House
Large detached house. Late C17, enlarged in same period; early-
mid C18 alterations. Major remodelling c1875 by George Devey for
Rev. Lord Charles Thynne. Random rubble limestone, partially
roughcast rendered; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-
storey with attic and cellar; L-plan extended to east.
Outbuilding range to west enlarged and incorporated. West side:
asymmetrical with off-centre 3-storey canted C19 bay window having
mullioned fenestration and small roughcast gable. Large offset
buttress to left and range of chamfered mullioned casements, 3-
light to ground floor, 2-light above and 2-light in eaves-mounted
gabled dormer. South side: full gable end of main range to left
with 2-light chamfered mullioned casement to each floor, all with
hoodmoulds. Large C19 canted bay window to right with mullioned
and transomed windows and roughcast gable. Later addition to
right has 2 mullioned ground floor casements grouped under
hoodmould; 4-light casement above. C20 hipped dormer with leaded
casement and tile-hung sides. Various gables to rear of east
range, one to Cl9 stair projection with quatrefoil in gable.
Large outshut to rear of west range. Flat-roofed hall addition in
angle with angled doorway having moulded architraves and pediment.
Interior: one double height room created in C19. Upper floor
stone fireplace with pulvinated frieze and bolection moulding is
