Description

SO 8602-8702 THRUPP LONDON ROAD, Brimscombe
(south side)

12/361 Main mill building at
Bourne Mills

GV II

Mill building. Early C19. Coursed rubble limestone; ashlar
chimney; diagonal asbestos slate roof. Four-storey; 3-storey
block at south end forming L-plan. West side: 8-window 2-light
chamfered mullioned casement fenestration, many retaining original
leading. One upper floor level doorway formerly had high-level
timber walkway leading to small mill building to west (q.v.). Some
other alterations to right. East side: 8-window fenestration, all
segmental arched with leaded timber casements. Parapet gabled
ends, north with segmental arched doorway to each floor and hoist
gantry above. Cut-down gable-end chimney. Lower block to south
end had one corner cut-off and rebuilt upon construction of the
adjacent Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway in 1844.
Interior not inspected. East wall of mill probably rebuilt c1840,
this explaining the apparent difference in construction dates of
the 2 main walls. Small mill building to west (q.v.) and canal
bridge to north (q.v.).
