Beech Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Early to mid C17. Squared limestone walling, some rubble, concrete
tile roof. Appears to be two parallel ranges built at different times, now with
lean-to extension at ground level on back and one side. A two-gabled building,
gables coped to front (away from road) and plain at back, the earlier unit,
right, is in rubble with 2 storeys, attic and part basement with one over 2 over
3-light hollow chamfer mullioned casements with stopped hoods and two single
lights, one blocked, to basement. The later part, left, is in good cut stone,
with plain chamfer mullioned casements as to right, but no basement. Right
return has 2-light casement at first floor; left return has 2 over 3 over
3-light, all with stopped hoods. The back has a small single light middle
right, and part-blocked 2-light low left. C20 entrance door in lean-to
addition, left. coped gables have cross-roll saddles; the earlier gable with an
ashlar stacks with moulded capping at the back, and a simpler stack to the other
gable. A large stone spout discharges rainwater centrally to the front.
Interior retains original roof structure, various heavy beams with stopped chamfers,
a modified bressummer fireplace and a spiral stair to its left.
A good survival with rather poor later additions.
