Description

PAINSWICK CHURCH HILL, Sheepscombe
SO 81 SE
(west side)
12/54 Rambler cottage
5.6.87
- II
Small 2-room cottage. Early C18 with C19 modifications. Squared and coursed
limestone, stone slate roof. Single storey and attic with 2-light chamfered
stone mullioned casement ground floor, left, and in half-gable at centre over
plank door. Left return has two small attic lights flanking the brick stack,
and right return a 2-light chamfered mullion casement to gable, which shows line
of an earlier roof profile. Interior not inspected, but door said to give
direct to parlour which has a timber-framed partition wall, beyond which, at a
lower level, is scullery; timber spiral stair. A modest agricultural cottage
evidently unaltered since the C19, and an interesting comment on social change
in the area.
