7/378 Stable block at Brook
Detached stable block. Late C18 or early C19. Mainly limestone coursed rubble
or near ashlar, but upper level on entry side is rendering marked out with
masonry joints, on lath backing; roof of profiled asbestos-cement sheet. A
handsome building which, on the entry side, away from street, has 6 bays, 5 of
these open and one closed with later ashlar block, the whole formed from 5 stone
Roman Doric unfluted columns carrying very flat elliptical 'arches' with marked
on voussoirs and a key-stone, all contained between the end walls 'in antis'.
Upper floor has C20 glazed central opening flanked by 2-light wood casements to
segmental tops. Gable ends plain, but each with recessed blank oculus to
gable. Street front has supporting plinth wall with offset from c 2.2 m to
c 1.5 m above sloping road, carrying plain wall having four blocked openings.
