Description

PAINSWICK HOLCOMBE
SO 81 SE
2/135
Cockpit at Yew Tree Mount
GV II
Underground cockpit. Dated 1830. Squared limestone, covered with earth and
planting; externally a large rustic vermiculated stone spans an opening letting
some light and air into a stone barrel-vault rectangular space about 5 x 4 m,
with a recess above to the 'window', and approached by long barrel vaulted pass-
age with flight of steps. Small, and uncharacteristic in shape, but locally
known as the cockpit, and not likely to have been an ice-house because of pro-
vision of light and ventilation: the entrance is said to have been originally
concealed within a garden store.
