Large detached house. C17 with C20 extensions. Limestone ashlar with stone
slate roof. An L-plan house with a large flat-roofed extension within and pro-
jecting beyond the south arm of the 'L'. Front to road is 2-storeys and attic;
left a 2-storey 2-windowed 3-light casement extension, then, right a coped gable
with 3-light stone mullion casements to ground and first floors and blocked
opening to attic, all set off-centre right; beyond the roof is swept down over
extension. Set back behind flat roof is low gable with 2-light casement.
Return, lift, has coped gable with large external stack to twin diagonal flues;
then C20 wing, beyond which cross-gable of original block with 3-light casement
to hood mould. Garden front is symmetrical two-gabled, at ground floor two
5-light C20 casements, and central blocked doorway; first floor has 4:3:4-light
recessed ovolo-mould mullioned casements, and to gables a 3-light recessed
hollow-chamfer mould casements. Continuous string above ground and first
floors, hood moulds to attics; coped gables are continued as parapets. North
front has, to right, gable with large opening and plank door under continuous
string, then at first floor a 2-light set low left, and two further 2-light to
continuous string; 2 small single lights to gable, which is coped and has single
diagonal stack. Set back, left, similar coped gable with 2-light casement to
hood mould, below which a single storey wing. Interior retains several good
fire surrounds, including C16 flat 4-centre arched stone surround to drawing
room with heavy overmantel to decorative frieze; small square opening fireplace
in adjoining room; at first floor with overmantel to guilloche frieze and C18
ovolo-mould surround. Stair to top level with newel and good formed balusters;
some C17 panelling to staircase which is mainly C20. At entrance to drawing
room a panel and muntin screen. Roof structure renewed, and at substantial
renovation said to have been undertaken c.1920, but this remains a substantial
house allied to the former mill which was one of several in the Painswick
Valley.
