Description

PAINSWICK NEW STREET
SO 8609-8709 (Part)
(south east side)
8/178
Gate Piers and walls to
Burdock, builders' yard
GV II
Gate piers and boundary walls to street. Early C19. Limestone ashlar. Pair of
rusticated piers about 650 mm square, to block capitals and cavetto mould
finials, at about 3 m centres; from each a convex quadrant of ashlar wall to
flat coping finished to pair of plain piers about 400 mm square with cappings as
main piers, but at lower level. To left a run of ashlar walling with some concrete
blockwork, about 2 m high to plain coping, connecting with similar boundary
wall to Cotswold House (qv). One of the lower piers has also been
reconstructed in concrete block, but the whole ensemble is of importance to the
visual quality of the street.
