Description

PAINSWICK NEW STREET
SO 8609 (part)
(south-east side)
9/190 Six Hamlett monuments
adjacent to the Gyde monu-
ment in churchyard of the
Church of St Mary
GV II
Six headstones in a close-set row. C18. Limestone. A series of small memo-
rials, with carved enrichment to the margins and with cherubs' heads in various
degrees of relief. Generally illegible, but earlier survey showed four of them
to be to members of the Hamlett family. In the late C18 and early C19, Hamlett
signed many of the metal plates inset to ledger slabs in the churchyard. These
boldly modelled stones have survived well, except for inscriptions, and are in
the limestone from shelly beds, often used as bases and tables to the chest
tombs.
