Group of varied monuments. Late C17 to mid C18. Limestone.
(a) Pedestal tomb. Mid C18. Square tomb to moulded capping on dentilled frieze
over 4 unfluted Ionic columns, raised shouldered panels, on 2-step base, former-
ly railed. The east face has a circular panel with raised moulding and good
carved embellishment. Mainly not legible, but can read John and Sarah Smith,
17.. . The 1879 survey records John Smith, Maltster, 1743.
(b) Hexagonal pedestal tomb. Mid C18. Flat pyramidal capping to moulded edge
and plain frieze over raised shouldered panels, including one C20 replacement;
moulded base and plinth on square sub-base. Not legible, but 1879 survey
records Michael Bridges, a baker, 1745.
(c) Oblong pedestal tomb with inset corners, mid C18. Flat table to moulded
edge, deep niche with bust to west, and with head and book to east, all much
worn; cartouches to north and south and fielded panels, on moulded base with
platform formerly railed. Some lettering to south decipherable, with date
possible 1711, but 1879 survey records Revd ...... Bridges, 1741.
(d) Chest tomb. Thick flat table to cyma mould edge, Lyre ends with cartou-
ches, sunk moulded side panels with Decorative pilasters, broad ovolo mould
base. Some lettering remains; the 1879 survey records Joan Smith, 1689. This
date is possible for such a design.
(e) Headstone, just south of (c). Shouldered cambered top, rich decorative
surround including winged cherub, sunk panel. Not legible.
(f) Headstone, just east of (b). Stone has cherub, rococo, cartouche, heavy
drapes.
A varied group, characteristic of the imaginative work of the sculptors at
Painswick.
