Description

PAINSWICK NEW STREET
SO 8609 (part)
(south east side)
9/204 Winchcombe and one uniden-
tified monuments c.25 m
north of north aisle in
churchyard of Church of St
Mary

GV II

(a) Chest tomb. Early to mid C18. Limestone. Flat table to cavetto mould,
lyre ends with cartouche, bolection mould panel with floral drops to north,
bolection moulded fielded panel to south, on wide cavetto base. Some lettering
to south, but generally not legible. The 1879 survey records Edwin Winchcombe,
clothier, 1739, but the overall design looks twenty years earlier than this.
This monument lies isolated from others in this zone.

(b) Small footstone, c.3 m north of (a). Probably late C17. A small stone
with good scrolls, flanked by small 'Ionic' colonettes, and with a deep panel.
A date of 1818 is legible, but the stone is certainly considerably earlier than
this.
