Description

PAINSWICK NEW STREET
SO 8609 (part)
(south east side)
9/220 Loveday and unidentified
monuments c.5 m east of
east chancel wall in the
churchyard of the Church
of St Mary
GV II*

(a) Chest tomb. Early C17. Limestone. A long, low monument, much worn, flat
table to moulded edge, panels to pilaster corners with raised rosettes, moulded
flared base. Remnants of inscription in capital lettering, but no longer legi-
ble. At the churchyard recording undertaken in 1879, this was given as William
Loveday, Yeoman, 1623: it is probably the oldest surviving chest tomb in the
churchyard. The Loveday family were of importance in Painswick during the C17
and C18.

(b) About 4 m north of preceding a headstone by the path with cambered head
with urn and floral drops with raised panel to moulded edge. Not legible.
