Hexagonal pedestal tomb. To John Cox, Clothier, 1770. Limestone. Hexagon
standing in paved surround to raised curb, formerly railed. Tomb has very flat
pyramidal capping to a moulded edge over plain frieze; inscription panels raised
and shaped; cavetto-mould base on step. Much lettering still decipherable,
earliest inscription to John Cox, 1770, but others through to 1860. Immediately
to north, set to the stone paving, a series of engraved plates, the latest date
1970; also first plate records seven children aged at death, respectively: 6
months, 1 hour, 4 years, 22 years, 21 years, 24 years and 19 years. Set imme-
diately east of tomb base is an engraved plate giving information on those
recorded on the monument. A simple design, but unusually records a 200 year
span of Painswick history.
