Large detached house. Dated GF (George Fletcher) 1633 over door, later modifi-
cations. Limestone ashlar, stone slate roofs. A grand L-plan house with the
re-entrant angle later filled to give square overall layout, also attached
service wing, back right, now used as cottage: central entrance to hall and
stair, main reception rooms to left with back-to-back fireplace. To road is two
storeys and attics, twin coped gables with parapet between, 3 windows; hollow
chamfer recessed mullion casements, at ground floor 3-light with an extra single
light to left of arched door with keyed and rusticated surround, all beneath
continuous moulded string which rises over door and is returned to south and
west fronts. At first floor 3, 2, and 3-light, and to gables, 2-light, all to
stopped hoods. Left return, to south, twin full-height Cotswold gables, 2
windows, 3-light to ground and first floors, 2-light to gables, all as entrance
front; west front has, left a late 2-gable addition, a connecting unit, filling
the re-entrant of the original 'L' and with the original stair turret with 3
over 2 over 2-light C20 or C19 casements, then the main coped gable of the
original building with 2 over 3 over 3-light casements and a 2-light to base-
ment. The stair turret projects beyond the gabled end and has a single over a
double lancet. The north front, now with principal C20 entry door has various
casements in conforming style, some of the C20, and flight of stone steps lead-
ing up to the attached Cottage. Large main ashlar stack with capping to left
half, a further stack to right. Interior: room to right of hall has recess,
possibly earlier spiral stair. Front parlour has 6 panels with guilloche
surround; a fire-back dated 1616(?) in eared architrave surround, pulvinated
frieze and fielded panels to sides and oak leaf enrichment; panelling fielded
with a raised moulding. Drawing room has large 4-centred fire opening and
linenfold decoration; 2-panel plaster ceiling with roses, beam with stops, shell
cupboard, 2-panel door to C17 hinges. Dining room has 2-panel ceiling in
plaster with pomegranate, chamfered beam, 2 good early panelled doors, a C18
fielded panel widow seat, 1930s fire in old bressummer opening, arched door to
kitchen and a graffito of 1717. One bedroom has a C18 fire surround with fluted
keystone, fielded panel sides, and a 2-panel early door. The cottage probably
by Detmar Blow, has some very wide floorboards, up to 750 mm across. A fine
house sensitively treated where modifications or additions have been made.
