No 7 (Three Gables)
(formerly listed as:
House immediately E
4.7.60 of No 7)
House. Built by John Oakey. c.1880. Squared and coursed limestone with
high plinth, stone slate roof, steeply weathered gable stacks over simple
plinths. T-plan, 3 gables to street. 1½ storeys, 3-windowed, all reserved
chamfer stone mullioned, 3-light with drips to ground floor, and 2-light
in gables; small square fixed light flanks central plank door in four-centred
arch under stopped drip. This is a very convincing pastiche. John Oakey
says of it: "I had used up all the stone I could, and I had made the new
look as old as possible. It greatly pleased my employer (Emma Dent) and
ever since I have prided myself on the job". (John OAKEY, Reminiscences of
Winchcombe, 1937. )
