Nos 79 and 79A
4.7.60 (previously listed

GV II

Pair of houses in row, recently dwelling over shop. Late C18 facade but
C16 or C17 work behind. Fine limestone ashlar with plain string at first
floor now cement rendered, parapet with moulded cornice and plain coping
which is cut back at right-hand end to accommodate returns of cornice to
No 77 (q.v.), Welsh slate roof. This was built as two deep properties on
the burgage plots, and each has some box timber framing at rear including
haunched corner posts and bracketed jetty, with Fletton brick fill to panel-
ling. Two storeys, 2-windowed, replacement sashes with glazing bars and
stone cills, either side of off-centre, blank panel at first floor; ground
floor reconstruction in 1983, two sashes with bars between glazed doors in
neo-Georgian door surrounds. Interior retains remnants of original fire-
places, but all now substantially modified; despite this, the two dwellings
retain a strong flavour of their original historic form.
