Nos 5 & 7
- (Abbots House)
House in row, incorporating former shop-front. C17 or earlier. Smooth
rendered ground floor, rough-cast above, with scalloped pargetting
edges to windows and gables, stone slate roof, but some tiles at back.
Two gables to street, and upper storey formerly jettied, but lower
walls now brought forward, and two parallel ranges at back, brick
stacks. Two storeys, 2-windowed, 1:3:1 and 1:4:1 oriels with 'Tudor'
heads to lights and small stone slate canopies over canted bay, sashes
with glazing bars ground floor left, and large casement with bars
and glazed C20 door, right, formerly a shop-front. To left is 6-panel
flush door under transome light with margin bars. A moulded bressummer
runs 2/3 width of the frontage, from left end and a carved angel acts
as a corbel under the right oriel. (See also NMR). Interior includes
some heavy framing in what was formerly the back wall, and the front
wall is also framed above the ground floor; the roof with many original
timbers retains one wind brace. The name of the property is thought
to derive from some association with the George Inn (q.v) adjoining
which was a pilgrims hostel for visitation of the Abbey.
