15/144 Swindon Manor

4.7.60

GV II

Large detached house. C17, largely rebuilt C18, some further
alteration/extension early C19. Brick. One gable square-
panelled timber-framing with rendered infill, slate roof and ashlar
and brick stacks. Basically rectangular plan, with 2 gables
projecting forwards slightly on north. Single-storey flat-roofed
C20 extension right of entrance front not of special interest.
Two storeys and attic. Almost symmetrical twin-gabled, 7-windowed
south front with a parapet over the central 3 bays. Central part-
glazed door. Central three bays and the first floor of the gables
lit by 12-pane sashes with gauged brick heads. Sash windows to
right-hand gable with wide flush frames with wide glazing bars
suggesting an early to mid C18 date. Sash windows to left-hand
gable with similar frames and glazing bars but set slightly back
from wall face. Two-light casements to gables with a single
decorative black brickwork lozenge above each window. Tall
casements with glazing bars with cambered-headed surrounds and
decorated transoms to ground floor of both gables. Two similar
windows to ground floor of right-hand return. Fenestration of
return otherwise 12-pane sashes. C20 six-panel door at centre
with large C20 window with glazing bars to right. C20 flat canopy
with a moulded margin over door and window. Single decorative
black brickwork lozenge to first floor. Timber-framed gable in
left-hand return with rendered infill. Large C20 window inserted
on ground floor. Two-light wooden casement above. Single axial
composite ashlar stack with four diagonally set shafts with moulded
cappings. Two projecting stacks, one incorporating coursed
squared and dressed limestone at the base, from the timber-framed
gable.
Interior; deep flat-chamfered beams. Stone Tudor-arched stone
fireplace with carved spandrels in present entrance hall. Mid C18
open-well staircase with turned balusters, ramped handrail and
Greek key decoration in the form of a continuous band below tread
ends. Good probably early-mid C19 reeded architraves with square
end blocks in the friezes containing fleurons. Fine grey marble
fireplace of similar date.
