House. c.1705 C19 extension, altered and repaired 1931 for
Major Dent-Brocklehurst, probably by W.H. Godfrey. Ashlar,
coursed, squared stone; part natural, part artificial stone slate.
'L' plan, 5-window wings, 2 1/2 storeys; 2 and single-storey return
to form U. Garden, originally entrance front: plinth with four 2-
light mullion windows to cellar (one blocked). Four stone steps
with nosings up to double doors, each 3 panel, centre panel narrow,
framed bolection-moulded stone surround, and narrow Roman Doric
pilasters: pulvinated frieze and pediment over. Each side two 2-
light mullion and transom windows, cyma moulding externally, hollow
chamfer inside. Leaded lights, iron opening lights. Plain string
course, 5 similar windows above, modillion eaves cornice, hipped
roof with sprocketed eaves, 2 pedimented dormers, 2-light, leaded
light casements. Two chimneys to rear, moulded caps. Front
extended about 2m each side by opening and short length of wall,
plain top, about 1.9m high: wall returns to front about 10.5m each
side to enclose forecourt, ending in square, monolithic corner
pier, plinth, moulded cap, ball finial. Left return to house,
plinth, 2 windows per floor as front, but hollow chamfer moulding
outside, plain string course, eaves and roof as front; chimney in
slightly-projecting gable on rear.
Interior: garden entrance to lobby, stone paved, dado panelling to
outer walls, tall panels above dado to back of stairs, 2-panel door
to cupboard under, moulded beam to ceiling. To left, drawing room,
bolection-moulded panelling, dado rail, panelled shutters and
window seats, 1931 stone fireplace surround. Dining room on right
of lobby, tall panels to stair wall, panelled shutters to windows,
cupboard in former window, 1931 stone fireplace surround: cyma
moulding to ceiling beam, as in end room of right wing: heavy
chamfer to beam in kitchen. Stairs approached from back, moulded,
pulvinated string, moulded handrail, square, panelled newels,
twisted balusters, dog-gate to cellar stairs. Walls panelled:
square, plastered dome over stairs at attic level. Trusses with
curved feet to principal rafters, collars, extended as flying
collars to chimney gables, king-post above collar, no ridge piece.
Barrel vault to cellar. Present entrance in courtyard made in
1931, turning house round. Low wing originally cottage and coach
house. Stone fireplace in drawing room copied from early C18 one
over dining room, since removed.
