Group of 5 chest tombs.
a) Thomas Gale chest tomb at the north-west corner of the group.
Limestone and sandstone. Moulded plinth. Inscription to
Thomas Gale, died 1789 on the north side on a raised
inscription panel with quadrant corners and an egg and tongue
edge moulding; eroded rosettes upper right and left; marginal
panels with hanging bell flower decoration. Inscription to
Richard Gale, died 1835 on the south side: raised inscription
panelwith a shouldered segmental head and a bead and reel edge
moulding; eroded rosettes upper right and left; marginal
panels with hanging bell flower decoration. Raised inscription
panels at either end. Sandstone capping with hollow-moulded
margin.
b) Unidentified chest tomb clm to the south of the preceding.
Sandstone within a spear-headed cast iron railing. Fielded
inscription panels, not legible. Fluted columns at each
corner. Capping stone with hipped inner capping stone.
c) Ann Oakley chest tomb clm east of the preceding. Sandstone
formerly with a cast iron railing, now removed. Fielded
inscription panels. Only legible inscription to Ann Oakley
died (?)1806. Moulded plinth. Capping with moulded margin.
d) Elizabeth Oakley chest tomb cO.5m on north of the preceding.
Sandstone. Raised oval inscription panel on the north side
with foliate decoration at each corner; marginal panels with
hanging bell flower decoration. Inscription panel to Mary Bubb
on the south side; eroded square inscription panel at the west
end; circular inscription panel at the east end.
e) Unidentified chest tomb c4.5m south of the preceding. C17-
early C18. Limestone. Cartouche-like inscription panel
decorated with fruit and flowers. Illegible cartouche-like
inscription panel on the south side with angels' heads upper
right and left and an hourglass lower left;' winged skull lower
right; marginal panels with hanging drapery. Quarter balusters
at each corner. The west end of the tomb is decorated with a
large shell motif with a plain shield at the centre and winged
cherubs' heads at the top. Raised oval inscription panel at
the east end with a cherub's head at the top.
