Group of 4 chest tombs. Limestone. From west to east:-
a) Chest tomb to Samuel Newman, died 1728 and other members of
that family. Moulded base; rectangular inscription panel
with bolection moulded surround; single rose with drapery
hanging down from the centre to each marginal panel.
Inscription to Samuel Newman on the south side with 2 cherubs'
heads and swag above; foliate decoration either side. Lyre-
shaped ends. Two cherubs' heads, flowers and a winged
hourglass at the west end. Plain oval panel with foliate
surround at the east end.
b) Unident ified chest tomb c0.5m north of the preceding.
Early-mid C17. No visible inscriptions. Very deep flat-
chamfered capping. Monument largely obscured by vegetation.
c) Unidentified chest tomb c0.5m east of the preceding. Plinth
with inset corners. Sunken rectangular inscription panels
with egg and dart mouldings to the surrounds, on the north and
south sides. Raised oval with an urn in relief at the centre,
at the east end, gadrooning below. Crossed palm fronds and
crown at the west end also with gadrooning below.
d) Unidentified chest tomb clm north of the preceding. Early
C19. Wide flat standing. Circular inscription panels on the
north and south sides surrounded by foliate scrollwork;
marginal panels also with foliate scrollwork. Quatrefoil at
the east end within an oak leaf surround with a ribbon tie at
the top partially covering a Greek key pattern frieze;
gadrooning below. Open bible with palm fronds either side,
crown and sunburst at the west end; frieze with Greek key
pattern; gadrooning below. Capping with moulded margin.
The decoration of this monument is particularly ornate in bold
relief.
