Row of 4 estate cottages. Built c1905. Coursed squared and finely
dressed limestone; stone slate roof; red brick stacks on ashlar
plinths. 'H'-shaped plan. l½ storeys. Four-windowed entrance
front with hipped gables projecting forwards to right and left.
Five-light stone-mullioned canted bays to the ground floor of each
gable; 3-light stone-mullioned segmental-headed stone-built dormer
above each bay. Two 4-light stone-mullioned casements with hoods
to the ground floor between the gables; 3-light stone-mullioned
dormers above. Pair of plank doors with fillets and strap hinges
at centre within moulded segmental-headed surrounds; hipped hood
on heavy wooden brackets over both doors. Single similar doors and
hoods to each return; 2-light stone-mullioned dormer above each
door. Fenestration of rear elevation matches that at front. All
windows with leaded panes. Axial stacks with composite star-shaped
C16 style shafts. Hipped gables. Flat coping and kneelers to
dormers. One of a set of good Arts and Crafts buildings on the
estate. The origin of the name 'The Palaces' derives from a
comment by Mrs. Eyres that 'she did not know she was building
palaces for her tenants'.
