Built in 1852-3 by W. Hinues and A. Bedborough. Commissioners' Gothic style,
old fashioned for this date. Yellow brick with stone dressings. Slate roof.
Rectangular, Neo-Decorated windows, battlemented parapet, angle pinnacles.
Distinctive 4 stage tower which is an effective landmark. Octagonal angle
turrets to lower 3 stages ending in tall pinnacles above 3rd stage. The upper
stage is recessed and has angle turrets and tall slender pinnacles with sharp
gables between. The Lamb Memorial Hall in Dorset Street (q.v.) was added
in 1884.
