Built in 1902 by Hawke as a Custom House which replaced the older Custom House
of 1847 (see Canute Road, Union Castle House (qv)) until the new Custom House
was built in Orchard Lane in 1965. "Wrennaissance" style. Three storeys red
brick with stone dressings, Hipped slate roof. Three projections at centre
and sides, the centre one having curved open pediment, the side ones triangular
open pediments. Twelve sashes in all with glazing bars intact. The centre
projection of 4 bays has 2 pilasters and 2 pairs of engaged columns through
first and second floors. The end projections, which are of one bay have coupled
pilasters. Stringcourse between ground and first floors. The second floor
windows are flanked by engaged Tuscan columns, the first floor windows are
in Gibbs surrounds and the ground floor windows are round-headed with keystones.
The end bays have doorcases set in round-headed arches with coupled engaged
Tuscan columns.
