9/59 Stable block to Dogmers-
field Park

- II

C18 and early C19. Square courtyard, surrounded by single-storeyed ranges, with
a gateway in the centre of the north side and a two-storeyed centrepiece on the
south; the northern part of the east side had a house inserted in the early C19.
Externally a plain red brick wall (English bond) with plinth, surmounted by a
red tile roof, hipped at corners; the centre of the west range has an arched
doorway with stone bay and impost blocks. The gateway is a plain round arch
with stone keystone and stone impost bands: the roof is gabled with a pediment
effect marked by dentils of vertical bricks, a clock in the centre, above the
roof a wooden bell turret with ogee cap. Internally, the east and west sides
have a slightly projecting centrepiece, with pediment gable brick dentilled;
this and the intervening units on 3 sides each have a central doorway with half-
circle windows (with high cills) on each side. The south range has 3 1st floor
windows in the centre block and a ground floor arrangement of 2:1 door, 1:2 oval
archways. The house inserted in the east wing has an external elevation of 2
storeys, 3 windows in Gothick style (ground floor bays) and an open gabled porch,
cement walling and massive diagonal triple flue stacks at each gable end. The
external roof slope on the east side and northern part of the south side is in
slate. There have been later changes, widening or closing original openings,
with some additions and an exposed north east corner caused by the demolition
of a late extension.
