SU 45 NE ECCHINSWELL & SYDMONTON SYDMONTON
7/36
Sydmonton Court

II*

C16, C17, C18, C19. A Tudor E-shaped mansion, with additions to the inner (south
front) area and alterations to the other facades; 2 storeys and attic. The roof of
blue tiles is of the last period, hipped and witharegular series of gabled dormers
with lattice windows; in the centre of the recessed south front there are 2 C16
stepped brick gables, one in the western angle, the other probably central to the
original front (with the third, in the east angle, now lost within later
reconstruction?) Tall C19 octagonal chimney shafts. Above the west range is a
timber-framed bell turret with a pyramid tiled roof. Walling is in red brickwork
English bond, with small stone quoins, which stop near the top, where a parapet has
been formed by continuing the walling (in Flemish bond) up to a stone coping. The
south end of the west wing, of 2 windows, has raised brick architraves and a first
floor band; the east elevation is marked by 2 massive attached stacks; the symmetrical
north elevation has 1.4.1 windows, with plain cement architraves, Gothic angular bays
at each side, and Gothic mouldings to the bays and first floor band. The recessed
part of the south front has been brought forward (C18) and masks an angular red brick
and stone Tudor stair turret, set in the west side angle. Sashes inreveals. The west
elevation has several detailed alterations of the last date. The east elevation has a
single-storeyed addition, with a Tuscan Order rendered in cement, with a recessed
portico.
