Description

SU 45 NW HIGHCLERE HIGHCLERE PARK
6/9
16.5.66 Heaven's Gate

II*

Mid C18. An eye-catching hill-top landscape feature, now hidden by trees; sited
axially on Sidown Hill, overlooking the Park from the south. A thick brick wall,
broken by a tall central arch, flanked by a lesser arch on each side. The symmetrical
front (north) has a pediment above a projecting rectangle containing 3 panels, with
triangles on each side with concave tops, all resting on a deep band along the whole
width, the outside points being marked by vases on plinths. The central arch has a
plain stone key, an architrave moulding, and an impost band continuing on each side to
link with the keystones of the side arches, above which are panels. All the mouldings
are of brickwork, but some of the detail is unclear due to deterioation. The
structure collapsed in 1739, and was rebuilt.
