of the house


C18. Symmetrical block of 2 storeys with a central projecting part having a
pediment-gable above an arch, resting on impost bands which continue as first-floor
bands on each side. The wings have 3 ground-floor windows, above which is a central
hayloft door flanked by blank panels. Hipped tile roof. Red brickwork in Flemish bond
with some blue headers. Within the archway are a central door with a small window
above, and a door on each side beneath a loft door. The main feature of the building is the
central clock tower, which was at one time the lantern above the Audit House (circa
1790) at Southampton; a small lead-capped square dome rises above a plain Order, with
square columns set diagonally at each corner, the main frame being rusticated, with an
arch-headed opening, now filled in (with a clock face within the arch).
